Instagram growth terms, defined
Plain definitions of the terms that come up around Instagram growth and automation. Each one stands on its own — no definition here depends on having read the one above it.
- Action block
- A temporary restriction Instagram places on a specific action — usually following, liking or commenting — after it decides the activity looks automated or excessive. The rest of the account keeps working. Blocks typically lift on their own after a period ranging from a few hours to a couple of weeks.
- Algorithm
- The set of ranking systems Instagram uses to decide which posts appear, and in what order, in each surface of the app. Feed, Stories, Explore and Reels are ranked separately with different signals, so there is no single Instagram algorithm to optimise for.
- Bot account
- An automated account with no genuine person behind it, usually created in bulk. Followers delivered through a coin-based exchange app are not bot accounts — they are real accounts belonging to other people using the same app — though they are following as part of an exchange rather than out of interest.
- Checkpoint
- Instagram's verification challenge, shown when it wants to confirm a login is genuine. It usually asks for a code sent by email or SMS. A checkpoint is not a ban; the session resumes once the challenge is completed.
- Coin
- The in-app credit used by exchange-based growth apps. Coins are earned by completing actions for other users and spent on actions for your own account. They have no cash value and cannot be exchanged for money or transferred between accounts.
- Cooldown
- A deliberate pause an automation tool takes between actions, or after a run, to keep its pacing below the thresholds that trigger rate limiting. Longer cooldowns mean slower results and lower risk.
- Engagement rate
- The proportion of an audience that interacts with a post, normally calculated as total interactions divided by followers, times 100. It is the most common way to compare accounts of different sizes, and it falls when follower count grows faster than genuine interest.
- Follow-back rate
- The share of accounts that follow you in return after you follow them. It is the core mechanic behind follow-for-follow growth, and it declines sharply as an account's follower count rises.
- Foreground service
- An Android component that lets an app keep working while it is not on screen. Android requires a persistent notification whenever one is running, which is why background automation apps always show one.
- Ghost follower
- A follower who never sees or interacts with your posts, either because the account is inactive or because the algorithm has stopped showing them your content. Ghost followers inflate follower count while pushing engagement rate down.
- Impressions
- The total number of times a post was displayed, counting repeat views by the same person. Distinct from reach, which counts each account only once.
- Rate limit
- A cap on how many actions an account may perform in a given window. Instagram does not publish its limits, and they vary with account age, history and recent behaviour, which is why no tool can guarantee a safe rate.
- Reach
- The number of unique accounts that saw a post at least once. Reach is the denominator most worth watching, because it separates a post that few people saw from a post that many people saw and ignored.
- Reel
- Instagram's short vertical video format. Reels are distributed largely to accounts that do not follow you, which makes them the main way most accounts reach new people.
- Retention (video)
- The proportion of a video still being watched at a given point. Early retention — whether people stay past the first two or three seconds — is the signal that most strongly determines whether a Reel is shown more widely.
- Safe Mode
- A setting in some automation apps that lengthens delays and spreads activity across a longer period. It completes fewer actions in the same time in exchange for pacing that looks less mechanical. It reduces risk; it does not remove it.
- Saves
- The count of people who bookmarked a post. Saves are a strong positive signal because they indicate the post had lasting value rather than a passing reaction, and they are harder to obtain artificially than likes.
- Session
- The authenticated connection between an app and an Instagram account, held as cookies and tokens. Instagram expires sessions routinely, which is why an automation app needs stored credentials to re-authenticate rather than asking you to log in repeatedly.
- Shadowban
- An informal term for a suspected hidden reduction in a post's distribution, with no notification given. Instagram has said it does not operate a feature by that name, though it does limit the reach of content it judges non-recommendable. Most suspected shadowbans are ordinary variance in reach.
- SMM panel
- A reseller marketplace where social media engagement is bought in bulk and delivered by third-party providers, usually from bot or compromised accounts. Distinct from coin-based exchange apps, where the actions come from real users of the same app.
